What is a Probate Valuation?
A Probate Valuation (or Probate and Chattels Valuation) is the legal terminology for the process of assessing the value of someone’s estate when they die. The most common reason for a probate valuation is to aid with the execution of a will, taking into account the deceased’s assets of value and removing any outstanding debts to provide a full account of their estate’s value.
Another reason that a probate valuation is important is to determine any inheritance tax that might be owed by the estate. Currently, any value below £325,000 is not subject to inheritance tax, and if the estate is valued at more than that, then any amount above £325,000 is taxed at 40%.
